Review Policy

I love books and I love sharing my thoughts about books I read.  This blog is a personal blog written and edited by me.  I alone determine the content on Build Enough Bookshelves, though I am not responsible for content on other websites or blogs to which I may link.  Every book review you read is my own opinion at the time of writing.  (I have been known to change my mind after a re-reading or after discussions with others and I certainly reserve the right to do so.)  I do not receive any compensation for my reviews, other than the occasional free review copy from a publisher or author, which in no way affects the review itself, but I will always let you know in the review if I received a free review copy.

All of the content on this blog is copyrighted by me.  You may not copy and paste it onto your blog, or reprint it in any form without express written (emailed) permission from me.  (Hint: If you ask nicely, I’m likely to say yes, as long as I’m properly attributed as the author, you link back to my original post, and you’re not making money off of my work).

For Publishers & Authors
As much as I would love to be able to accept every book for review, I have a limited amount of time on this earth (as do we all) and reading and writing, as much as I love them, have to fit around my busy family life and other obligations, so I am fairly selective about my reading material:

  • I read widely, so there are many genres I might be interested in, including both fiction and non-fiction, from middle grade readers on up.
  •  At this time I am accepting self-published books on a *very limited* basis.  I have read some wonderful self-published books that are truly among my favorites, but please do not get your feelings hurt if I don’t jump at the chance to read your book. If I say no, find a blogger or book reviewer for whom it’s a better fit and that’ll probably work out better for everybody anyway.
  • I don’t review audio books.
  • I do own a Kindle, but prefer to read the old-fashioned print version whenever possible, so I’m less likely to read/review your book if it is an ebook only.
  • I am absolutely not interested in soft porn romance/bodice-rippers, books that are exceptionally violent/gory, or books that employ the f-word on every page (I know it's a versatile word, but you really need to expand your vocabulary if that’s the only word you can come up with).

If you would like to send me a copy of your book for review or to give away to my readers, please contact me at egeddesbooks (at) gmail (dot) com.  Please include basic information about the book you’d like me to review (title, author, cover image, teaser/back-of-the-book blurb).  If you’d be open to a giveaway, let me know that, too.  I will provide my shipping address when I respond.

Please note that I do not review books in the order I receive them, and agreeing to accept a review copy does not guarantee that I will write a review of the book.  While I reserve the right to agree to a specific review date, and I will do my best to review ARCs within a month of the publication date, I will mostly read and review your book when I get to it.  Repeated emails asking about it will just irritate me (ask my kids how well that works) and I will likely move your book to the bottom of the stack out of spite.

What I Read

I read lots.  And pretty widely and randomly.  I enjoy young adult and adult contemporary fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, future dystopian fiction.  I love learning, so I go through a great deal of all kinds of non-fiction: biographies, popular science and psychology, social issues, politics, history, hot topics, religion and spirituality.  I also keep coming back to certain self-help genres, like parenting, since I have so much to learn.  I have three young boys, so I'm always on the lookout for good middle-grade books we can read together (we've read the Harry Potter series, the Oz books, the Narnia series, the Little House on the Prairie books, and we're working on Lloyd Alexander's Prydain series right now).

Generally, I have about three books going at any one time, including the one I'm reading aloud to my boys at bedtime.  Any more than that and I reach the point of diminishing returns.  But I read pretty quickly, so my currently-reading list turns over frequently.

If you want more details on what I've read over the past couple of years, you can check out my Goodreads profile here.

  1. Hi Emily: Enjoying your blog about books and reading. I love to read too and I do not know how you find time to do it. I work full time as an RN and have kids, husband, and 2 dogs. I am so busy and get interrupted a lot when I sit down to read. I enjoy your book reviews which help me know what to read in the future. Thanks.
